- What is the Community Outcomes in Asthma web directory and why has it been developed?
The Community Outcomes in Asthma web directory has been created to give health professionals and community organisations access to over 600 Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing-funded grant projects conducted between 2002 and 2005.
The National Asthma Community Grants Scheme had produced many high-quality and valuable community initiatives. However, much of the good work done at a community level had remained localised and somewhat hidden from the broader population and other groups seeking to replicate successful project outcomes. The Asthma Foundation of WA sought additional funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing to create the Community Outcomes in Asthma web directory, with the aim of increasing the awareness of the Grants Scheme and facilitating access to both the project results and the organisations behind them.
The directory allows health professionals and community groups to share information about successful projects, stimulating discussion and collaboration between different groups and leading to a broader dissemination of best-practice messages such as those promoted by the Asthma Cycle of Care (previously know as the Asthma 3+ Visit Plan). It is hoped that this sharing of knowledge will contribute to the development of stronger health and community partnerships between groups interested in asthma or health promotion.
- What sort of information will I find in the Community Outcomes in Asthma web directory?
Most of the grant project summaries will include the following information:
- The name of the project
- The organisation that co-ordinated the project (contact details are provided wherever possible)
- The grant period
- The grant amount
- The primary target area (a detailed list of the target audiences is also provided)
- A brief outline describing the project
- Whether or not resources were produced
- Who the grant co-ordinators worked with during their project
- What the grant co-ordinator’s comments were about the project
Most of the 2002 grant projects are included in the A–Z Grants List, however information was unavailable for a number of 2002 projects during the compilation of the Community Outcomes in Asthma web directory. The grants that are missing information are listed in the Additional 2002 Grants Table. We regret that it will not be possible to update the information for these grant projects in future.
A number of showcase grants have been highlighted for each state and additional information is provided for these projects, including:
- the successes experienced during and as a result of the project
- the difficulties that the grant co-ordinator encountered and what was done to overcome them
- additional comments or information about the project, both from the grant co-ordinators and people from outside the grant organisation
- the services or mission of the grant organisation
- electronic copies of any resources that were produced by the showcase grants are available for download
For further information about the directory, please refer to the Disclaimer.
- How do I use the search functions?
- To start searching the directory, head to the A–Z Grant Index or Showcase Grants sections. You will see the headings ‘year’, ‘grant’, ‘project title’, ‘organisation’, ‘primary target area’ and ‘state’. Simply click on the heading that you are interested in and the projects will sort in alphabetical or numerical order. Click on the same heading again to change the sort direction. To view a particular project summary, click on that project’s title. Contact details have been provided for most of the grant organisations and we encourage health professionals and community groups to share information and develop new partnerships in their respective fields.
- How many grant projects are listed in the Community Outcomes in Asthma web directory?
There were over 600 National Asthma Community Grant projects co-ordinated by the Asthma Foundation of WA during 2002 and 2005. During 2002, small grants of $300 and $1500 were provided to approximately 430 recipients. During the 2003–4 grant period, 148 grants of $5000–$12,000 were conducted and 28 grants of a similar size were conducted in 2005.
The Asthma Foundation of Victoria is supervising twelve “Asthma Targeted Intervention Grants” during 2006–7.
- I’d like to find out more about a particular project.
Contact details have been provided for most of the grant organisations so that health professionals and community groups may share information and develop new partnerships in their respective fields.
The Asthma Foundation of WA has notified the grant organisations about the directory wherever possible and in most cases, receptionist staff will be aware that people may call for further information. Where a grant co-ordinator has moved on, it may not be possible to speak to anyone about the project and the information provided on the Asthma Foundations of Australia website may comprise all the information that is available on that particular grant.
- Where can I get more information about future Grant Funding Schemes?
- Please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria for further information.
- Where can I find out more about asthma?
- Please contact the Asthma Foundation in your state. To find out more about the statistics associated with asthma, please visit the National Asthma Council website.
- I am interested in the range of programs or services available for people with asthma.
- Please contact the Asthma Foundation in your state for more information about the many services on offer. Each Foundation provides free asthma education for people with asthma and their carers, offers guidelines to help various organisations to adopt asthma aware policies and conducts asthma management training for health professionals.
